Car mile
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000953
A unit of measure in railway operations representing the movement of a single railway car over a distance of one mile. Railroads aggregate these units to calculate total traffic volume, operational efficiency, and revenue or cost per unit of distance. A train with 50 cars traveling 100 miles generates 5,000 car miles, a figure distinct from the 100 train miles recorded for the locomotive's journey.
