Carry

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000973

To possess sufficient momentum to continue moving forward after the propulsion system has been disengaged. A vessel's ability to carry its way is a function of its displacement, hull form, and initial speed, with larger, heavier ships maintaining momentum for longer distances. This characteristic is a key consideration during maneuvering operations, such as approaching a dock or anchorage, where the engine is stopped well in advance.
