Chaffy
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001061
Describing a sample of harvested grain that contains a high proportion of chaff, the dry, scaly protective casings of the seeds. A chaffy condition indicates incomplete separation during threshing or winnowing, resulting in a lower quality, less dense product that requires further cleaning. The presence of excessive chaff increases bulk, complicates storage, and reduces the market value of the grain until it is properly processed.
