Conrail, a former Class I railroad in the northeastern United States. It was created in 1976 by the U.S. government to take over the operations of several bankrupt railroads, including the Penn Central Transportation Company. Conrail's assets were divided between CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern Railway in 1999.
