Displacement on demand is an engine technology that deactivates a portion of the engine's cylinders under light load conditions. This mechanism improves fuel efficiency by reducing the amount of fuel consumed when full power is not required. It typically involves hydraulic lifters that prevent the valves of selected cylinders from opening.
