A former United States military program, the Joint Cargo Aircraft, intended to develop a new transport aircraft for the Army and Air Force to provide responsive battlefield airlift. The program selected the Alenia C-27J Spartan to replace aging C-23 Sherpas, C-12 Hurons, and C-26 Metroliners. After a period of joint operation and testing, the Department of Defense transferred all C-27J aircraft and their support functions exclusively to the Air Force before the fleet was ultimately divested.
