Dog-belt

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001782

A type of harness worn around the waist, to which a chain was attached for pulling carts or tubs of coal in underground mines. Used primarily by women and children in British collieries during the 18th and 19th centuries, the chain passed between the legs, forcing the worker to crawl on all fours. The United Kingdom's Mines and Collieries Act of 1842 banned the underground employment of all females and of boys under the age of ten, effectively ending this practice.
