A small earring, formed from ear and the diminutive suffix, a rare jewelry term. The word is also used in agriculture for the small, not fully developed grain-bearing tip of the stem of a cereal plant. It is not a fitting for reinforcing holes in fabric, which is an eyelet or grommet.
