A permanent form of livestock identification created by cutting a specific pattern of notches or holes into an animal's ear. The shape, size, and position of the cuts serve as a code to indicate ownership, year of birth, or lineage. Unlike ear tags, which can be lost or removed, earmarks are permanent and are registered with state or breed authorities, with specific notch patterns assigned to individual farms.
