Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004368

A portable, battery-powered radio transmitter used to alert search and rescue services in a life-threatening emergency. When activated, a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) transmits a coded distress signal on the 406 MHz frequency, which is detected by the Cospas-Sarsat satellite system. Unlike an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) which is registered to a vessel, a PLB is registered to an individual.
