DME

Distance Measuring Equipment, an electronic navigation system that provides an aircraft with a slant range distance to a ground-based transponder beacon. The aircraft transmits an interrogation signal, and the ground station replies, allowing the aircraft's receiver to calculate the time difference and thus the distance. DME operates in the UHF frequency band.
