Ensign

The national flag flown on a vessel to indicate its country of registration and nationality. It is the principal flag displayed and is distinct from a jack, which is flown at the bow, or a house flag, which identifies the vessel's owner. By maritime custom, the ensign is flown from a staff at the stern when in port and from the gaff of the aftermost mast when at sea.
