Extension

A telephone connected to a private branch exchange, or an additional telephone sharing the line of a main set, reached by a short internal number. On a PBX, users dial the extension number, usually three or four digits, to call each other without using outside lines. An extension number is also used to transfer an outside call to a particular desk or person.
