Fathom

A unit of length used in maritime contexts to measure water depth, rope, or anchor chain. It is a customary unit defined as exactly six feet, or 1.8288 meters. Depth soundings on nautical charts are recorded in fathoms, feet, or meters, and the chart's legend specifies which unit is used.
