A visual indicator on a line, chain, or cable to denote a specific length or depth. On an anchor chain, marks consist of painted links, wire wrappings, or other attachments that allow the crew to know how much chain has been paid out. These are typically placed at set intervals, such as every 15 fathoms (90 feet or 27.5 meters), with a standardized color and wire-turn sequence for identification.
