Reporting mark

A two-to-four letter code, often followed by a number, assigned to railway rolling stock by regulatory bodies to identify the owner or lessee of the equipment. This mark is stenciled on the side of freight cars and locomotives, facilitating tracking and inter-railroad operations. In North America, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) assigns these marks.
