Fourth class

A historical designation for the most basic and inexpensive form of passenger accommodation on a railway. Fourth-class carriages, where offered, provided minimal comfort, sometimes consisting of open wagons with simple benches or even just standing room for passengers. This class was intended for laborers and the poorest travelers, offering transportation at the lowest possible fare, and was phased out as service standards improved.
