Hand-tab

A manual method of securing asphalt shingles in which small dabs of asphalt-based roofing cement are spot-applied beneath each tab, bonding it to the course below to resist wind uplift. It is used where factory-applied sealant strips will not activate, such as in cold weather, or where the shingle manufacturer calls for hand sealing. Manufacturer instructions specify dabs about one inch (25 mm) across placed under each tab.
