Heavy rail

A class of high-capacity, electric-powered urban railway, characterized by its separation from other traffic and high passenger volumes. Heavy rail systems operate on dedicated rights-of-way, either underground in tunnels, elevated on viaducts, or at surface level with no grade crossings. This category is distinguished from light rail, which may operate in mixed traffic on city streets.
