Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003066
An electric railway system that connects two or more cities or towns, operating with self-propelled railcars. These systems, which peaked in popularity in the early 20th century, combined the characteristics of urban streetcars and mainline passenger trains, running on city streets and on dedicated rights-of-way in rural areas. The cars were typically heavier and faster than city streetcars to handle the longer distances between population centers.
