Hound
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002907
A shoulder or projection on a mast that provides support for the trestletrees and the top, which are components of the upper mast structure on a traditional sailing vessel. Hounds serve as the main bearing points for the standing rigging that supports the mast section above. On modern yachts, the term may refer to the attachment point for shrouds and stays, even if it is a simple welded fitting rather than a structural shoulder.
