Tabernacle
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005840
A sturdy housing on deck that supports the heel of a mast, incorporating a pivot pin that allows the mast to be lowered without being completely detached from the vessel. This structure is common on sailing dinghies, trailer sailers, and canal boats that must navigate low clearances. A tabernacle is distinct from a mast step, which provides a fixed socket for the mast base and does not permit pivoting.
