Long Tom
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-007086
A type of trough-like sluice box used in early placer mining operations for washing gold from sand and gravel. It consisted of a long, inclined wooden trough, typically 12 to 24 feet long, with a perforated iron plate at its lower end that allowed finer material and gold to pass through into a second box with riffles. A constant stream of water was directed into the upper end to wash the excavated material down its length.
