Old World ROM
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003987
A Macintosh firmware design in which a ROM chip on the logic board holds the Macintosh Toolbox, the core operating system routines. It covers all Macs made before the 1998 iMac, though the label is mostly applied to the early PowerPC models such as the beige Power Macs rather than the older 68k machines. It was replaced by the New World ROM, which has a small boot ROM and loads the Toolbox from the startup disk.
