Pamela hat

A style of women's hat made from straw, featuring a low, flat crown and a wide, circular brim. It is secured to the head with ribbons tied under the chin or at the back of the neck. The style became popular in the 1830s and 1840s, taking its name from the title character of Samuel Richardson's 1740 novel, 'Pamela', who is depicted wearing such a hat.
