Park

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004144

A transmission gear selector position that mechanically locks the drivetrain, preventing the vehicle's wheels from rotating. In an automatic transmission, this is achieved by engaging a parking pawl, a metal pin that fits into a notched ring on the transmission's output shaft. The park position is intended for holding a vehicle stationary on level ground and is not a substitute for the parking brake, especially on an incline.
