Pitwork
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004342
The system of pumps, rods, and associated machinery used to dewater a mine shaft and underground workings. Originally consisting of wooden rods connected to a surface engine, pitwork lifts water in stages to the surface to keep the mine from flooding. Modern systems use a series of submersible electric pumps, but the principle of staged water removal remains.
