Pitting resistance equivalent number

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004341

A calculated value used to predict the resistance of stainless steels and other alloys to pitting corrosion in chloride-containing environments. It is derived from the weight percentages of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen in the alloy. A higher PREN indicates greater resistance to pitting, with values above 32 often considered good for seawater applications.
