Alloyant

An element or substance added to a pure metal to form an alloy, modifying its properties. The alloyant, also known as an alloying agent, dissolves in the base metal in either a solid solution or by forming intermetallic compounds. Common examples include carbon added to iron to make steel, zinc added to copper for brass, and chromium added to steel for stainless steel, each imparting specific characteristics like hardness or corrosion resistance.
