Steel

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005638

A hard, durable alloy of iron and carbon used to make components for printing machinery, such as gears, rollers, and cutting blades. In the intaglio process, steel plates are used for engraving because they can withstand the high pressure of the press and produce a very large number of sharp, consistent impressions. Steel-faced electrotypes provide a more durable printing surface than softer copper facings.
