Bower-Barff process

An obsolete method for protecting iron and steel from corrosion by forming a layer of black iron oxide on its surface. The process involved heating the metal in a retort and then introducing superheated steam, followed by carbon monoxide. This created a durable, rust-resistant coating, historically used for architectural ironwork and cast iron pipes.
