A thin, adherent oxide layer that forms on the surface of steel when heated to specific temperatures, typically between 290 and 310 degrees Celsius. This bluing process provides a degree of corrosion resistance and can also be used for aesthetic purposes. The color varies with temperature and the thickness of the oxide layer.
