Gamma iron
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002507
A non-magnetic allotrope of iron with a face-centered cubic crystal structure, stable at high temperatures. This crystalline form, also called austenite, has a greater solubility for carbon than other iron allotropes, allowing it to hold up to 2.04% carbon in solid solution. Gamma iron exists in pure iron between 912 °C and 1,394 °C; alloying elements like nickel can stabilize this phase down to room temperature, as seen in austenitic stainless steels.
