Martensite

A very hard and brittle crystalline structure formed in steel by rapid cooling (quenching) from a high temperature. This phase is characterized by a body-centered tetragonal crystal lattice. Martensite is a supersaturated solid solution of carbon in iron, responsible for the high strength of hardened steels.
