Self-hardening
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005148
Describing a material, typically steel, that hardens upon cooling in air from an elevated temperature without the need for a rapid quench. This property is due to its specific alloy composition, which promotes the formation of martensite or other hard phases at slower cooling rates. Air-hardening steels are less prone to distortion and cracking.
