Case hardening
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000982
A heat treatment process that creates a hard, wear-resistant surface layer, or case, on a metal component while maintaining a tough, ductile core. This is achieved by diffusing carbon or nitrogen into the surface of low-carbon steel. Common methods include carburizing, nitriding, and carbonitriding, with case depths ranging from 0.1 to 2.0 millimeters.
