Case harden

To create a hard, wear-resistant surface layer on a metal component while maintaining a softer, tougher core. This is achieved by diffusing elements like carbon or nitrogen into the surface at elevated temperatures. Common methods include carburizing, nitriding, and carbonitriding, which alter the chemical composition of the surface.
