Cementation

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001042

A thermochemical surface treatment process where a metal is heated in a solid or gaseous medium containing another element, which then diffuses into the surface. This alters the chemical composition and properties of the surface layer, typically increasing hardness or corrosion resistance. Carburizing and nitriding are common examples of cementation processes.
