Brittle fracture

The sudden and rapid propagation of a crack through a material with little or no prior plastic deformation. This type of failure occurs without warning and is common in materials like ceramics, cast iron, and some high-strength steels at low temperatures. It is characterized by a flat, granular fracture surface.
