Bainite

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000392

A plate-like microstructure of ferrite and cementite that forms in steels at temperatures between those that produce pearlite and martensite. It is produced by cooling austenite rapidly enough to avoid pearlite formation, then holding it at a constant temperature for a transformation to occur. Bainite offers a combination of high strength and good toughness, making it desirable for components like crankshafts and gears.
