Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005795

A point in a limestone or karst region where a stream or river disappears underground, also known as a sinkhole or swallow hole. In mining, this geological feature presents a hazard because it can channel surface water directly into underground workings, causing unexpected flooding. Swallets are identified during geological surveys to plan for mine dewatering and to avoid intersecting them with tunnels.
