The left-hand side of a vessel when an observer is on board and facing the bow, or front. This nautical term provides an unambiguous reference for direction, regardless of the observer's orientation. At night, the port side of a ship is indicated by a red navigation light, visible from a 112.5-degree arc from dead ahead to two points abaft the beam.
