Pulley-plough
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004573
A type of steam-powered ploughing engine system used from the mid-19th to the early 20th century, employing two engines placed on opposite sides of a field. A steel cable was wound between the drums of the two engines, pulling a multi-furrow balance plough back and forth across the soil. This method avoided soil compaction caused by the weight of an engine driving directly on the field, a problem with direct-traction steam tractors.
