Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004640
To lock a forme of metal type and printing blocks securely into a metal frame called a chase using expanding wedges known as quoins. This process applies even pressure from all sides, holding the individual elements tightly in place so they form a single, solid unit that can be moved and mounted on a letterpress. The forme must be locked perfectly square and tight to prevent type from falling out during printing.
