Rail joint
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004667
A mechanical connection fastening the ends of two adjacent rails together to form a continuous track, also known as a fishplate. The assembly consists of a steel bar bolted to the web of each rail end, holding them in alignment both vertically and horizontally. While bolted joints are common on secondary lines, most main lines now use continuously welded rail, which eliminates the joints and the associated maintenance.
