Control joint

A planned and sawed or grooved line in concrete or masonry surfaces designed to regulate where cracks will occur due to shrinkage or thermal expansion. These joints create weakened planes that encourage cracking along a predetermined line. They are typically spaced at regular intervals according to engineering specifications.
