To abrade, scratch, or chemically treat the hard outer coat of seeds to break dormancy and promote germination. This process allows water and oxygen to penetrate the seed embryo, initiating metabolic activity. Mechanical scarification often involves rubbing seeds with sandpaper or nicking them with a knife.
