Sears-Haack body
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005113
The theoretical shape of a body that has the lowest possible wave drag for a given length and volume when moving at supersonic speeds. This elongated, pointed shape minimizes the intensity of the shock waves it creates. Aircraft fuselages and external fuel tanks are designed to approximate the Sears-Haack body profile to reduce transonic and supersonic drag, a principle known as area ruling.
