The natural process where mature seeds detach and fall from the parent plant before harvest, leading to yield losses. This characteristic is undesirable in cultivated crops, as it reduces the amount of grain or seed that can be collected. Plant breeders develop varieties with reduced shattering tendencies to maximize harvestable yield.
