Apple seed

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000251

The small, hard-cased pome fruit seed from which an apple tree can be grown, although it will not produce a tree true to the parent fruit's variety. Due to genetic variability, trees grown from seed yield apples that differ in taste, size, and quality from the parent. For this reason, commercial apple production relies exclusively on grafting desirable cultivars onto established rootstock rather than planting seeds.
